Biomass: A Comprehensive Overview

Biomass is biological material derived from living or recently deceased organisms. While it typically refers to plant-based materials, it can also encompass animal-based substances. Common sources include:

  • Wood and Agricultural Residues: This encompasses tree branches, leaves, and residues left after crop harvests, such as corn stalks and rice husks. These by-products, traditionally considered waste, are valuable energy sources.
  • Energy Crops: These are plants explicitly cultivated for energy purposes. Examples include switchgrass and miscanthus, which have high yield rates and can grow in a variety of conditions.
  • Animal Manure and Human Waste: In biogas plants, this waste undergoes anaerobic digestion, producing methane-rich biogas.
