University of Cambridge - MPhil Surgery

Greetings! My name is Haris. For the past four years, I have dedicated myself to tutoring students in BMAT, UCAT, medical school interviews, and crafting compelling personal statements for medical school applications. My passion for teaching and medical education is not just a professional pursuit but a continuous learning journey, where I too learn immensely from my students. This reciprocal learning experience has been instrumental in honing my skills and deepening my understanding of the intricacies of medical education.

Tutoring Experience

Over the last 5 years, I have tutored and mentored over 100 students in all aspects of their medical school applications which include: GCSE/A-Level chemistry and biology, aptitude tests such as the UCAT and BMAT, personal statement and interviews.

Through continuously learning and building from my own experience of medical school applications and tutoring, I have managed to support my students in attaining places in some of the top medical schools in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge, maintaining an above 90% success rate.

Throughout medical school, I have been able to further enhance my teaching portfolio through my roles as the clinical and education lead for the university surgical society. Through this, I have been tutoring pre-clinical year medical students (Years 1&2) in anatomy, physiology and surgical skills. This has facilitated me in improving my aptitude as an educator both in person and through various virtual teaching platforms. As a tutor for aspiring medics, with particular focus on entrance exams and interviews, I have been able to develop a comprehensive bank of teaching resources for my students which is growing and improving through feedback.

I have benefitted immensely from the teaching opportunities both within my university and externally to understand my client needs and tailor my resources and teaching methods according to their needs to support their development and success.

Tutoring Approach

Medicine Admissions Tests (UCAT & BMAT): Being a mature, gap year medical student myself, I have attained first-hand experience of taking the UCAT and BMAT multiple times and, through my experience, I have developed efficient strategies revision techniques to perform well in these exams. Over the last 4 years, I have had the pleasure of coaching and mentoring many students to success in these exams using my resources which I regularly keep up to date. My approach with tutoring for entrance exams, as with all of my tutoring, is to spend some time understanding my students’ learning habits and then work with then to devise a plan for success. My main aim is to demystify some of the myths and fears students have about these exams and use my lessons to work through difficult practice questions.

Medicine Interviews: During my application process, I undertook interviews in all formats including traditional Oxbridge, MMI, group and mixed interviews. I have also gained experience in these interview formats at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels which has equipped me with valuable experience for my students. I carry out my interview tutoring through interactive real-time lessons through an online platform where I am able to take students through the content of medical interviews as well as conducting mock interviews and provide constructive feedback. With interviews, I like to be creative and put a particular emphasis on supporting my students by helping them to discover their motivation for success and encourage them to take part in daily homework exercises, which I set, to help them stand out from the crowd.

GCSE (Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Maths for GCSEs and BMAT): Having extensively studied these subjects for both GCSEs and BMAT, I have gained a lot of experience in developing good study techniques and revision material which I have continuously developed through my past tutoring. I maintain the same standard across all subjects I tutor and use real time teaching and problem solving to help my students achieve their academic goals.
