Tutoring Experience

Through a nonprofit organisation that I run, I have tutored numerous students, through both 1-1 sessions, and group discussions.

I have offered guidance in University Admissions, including entrance exams, as well as Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry to struggling GCSE and A-Level students.

Aside from 1-1 tutoring sessions, I also ran Q and A’s, and online webinars where we discuss topics like ‘How to get a grade 9 in GCSE Maths’ and ‘How to ace the UCAT.’

Further, I have also tutored my peers through my school through small group sessions, where we discuss and break-down particularly difficult topics to cover both the understanding of the topic as well as exam technique.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is very interactive.

Firstly, it begins by recapping the lessons of the previous session through some quick questions. Then we discuss any work that had been set, and clear up any queries/doubts the student may have, which would allow me to identify any weak areas. Next, I outline the learning objectives for the present session. I use each session to concentrate on a particular topic, and ensure the student is fully informed how to tackle that topic, including the nuances of the slightly harder, ‘outside-the-box’ questions. Once the concepts are taught, we do a few questions together, interactively discussing the solution to apply the knowledge. Throughout the session, I will be asking if the student fully understands my teaching, and if they have any doubts. I then finish off by setting some further work to consolidate the teaching.

Both before and after the session, I liked to spend some time speaking to the student, to have a general chat/offer advice etc. as a sign of friendliness and openness. (This would be after the session has been completed, so the student is not paying for this)

Testimonials

“Alwin was a great tutor who always responded quickly with any queries or problems I had. He provided specific help for the BMAT and UCAT admissions assessments including a section break-down with tips on how to excel. Without him I wouldn’t have been able to make the progress that I did”

Keiron Christie-Downie, previous student

“...Alwin had great knowledge of the subject and was able to communicate it in a manner that allowed me to fully understand the topics. Something I couldn’t do prior to his lessons”

Ethan Prunty, previous student
