Tutoring Experience

Throughout my academic journey at Columbia University, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English, I've developed a deep appreciation for the craft of writing and the nuances of language. My role as the Opinions Section Editor at Groton's school newspaper honed my editing skills and deepened my understanding of impactful communication. There, I managed multiple op-ed articles monthly and designed layouts, which allowed me to teach younger students the fundamentals of journalism and writing.

In addition to my editorial experience, I have actively participated in various creative writing programs, including the prestigious Iowa Young Writers Studio and the University of Iowa's Summer Writing Residency. These experiences enabled me to experiment with different genres, from speculative fiction to poetry, while critiquing and learning collaboratively with peers.

As an ESOL Teaching Assistant at Columbia, I embraced the challenge of teaching English grammar to adult non-native speakers. Utilizing my Spanish skills, I ensured clear and effective communication, helping students grasp complex concepts and engage fully with their assignments.

My tutoring style is deeply influenced by my leadership and community involvement, such as leading cultural trips around New York City and mentoring at Interlochen Arts Academy. These roles have taught me the importance of empathy, engagement, and adaptability—qualities I bring to every tutoring session.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is centered around fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment where each student feels valued and motivated to explore their potential. I believe that effective learning stems from a combination of structured guidance and creative freedom, allowing students to develop both their academic skills and personal voice.

In each session, I start by understanding the individual needs and goals of my student. This helps me tailor the content and pace accordingly, ensuring that the lessons are both challenging and achievable. I use a mix of traditional and innovative teaching methods, including direct instruction, discussion-based learning, and hands-on activities. This variety keeps the sessions engaging and adaptable to different learning styles.

Feedback is a crucial part of my teaching method. I provide constructive and timely feedback to help students refine their work and thought processes. I also encourage students to critique and question, fostering a dynamic learning environment where critical thinking is developed alongside writing skills.

For students working on writing and journalism, I incorporate real examples from various media and guide them through the editing and revision processes. For ESOL students, I blend grammar and vocabulary exercises with practical language usage, facilitating real-world communication skills.

My ultimate goal is to inspire confidence in my students. I strive to make learning a rewarding and enjoyable experience that encourages continuous growth and a lifelong passion for learning.
