Tutoring Experience
I'm a specialist online tutor in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning and English as a Second Language (ESL). I've extensive teaching and tutoring experience in many areas of mathematics, e.g. high school and college level calculus, trigonometry, precalculus, algebra, differential equations, IB Mathematics, as well as more advanced topics like group theory, topology, complex analysis, mathematical statistics, probability etc.
Being a PhD and having passed numerous competitive exams en route, I can teach/tutor any level of mathematics and statistics. I'd very much like to tutor for competitive exams like ACT, SAT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE as well as other country-specific competitions.
My teaching and tutoring experience is mainly divided into two parts: (1) during my PhD at Rutgers University, USA, I taught for five and a half years several undergraduate courses, where I gave lectures, designed and graded homeworks, quizzes and exams. The class stretch were from ten to forty students per class and each week I used to have roughly five hours of in-class teaching and one hour of office hours. Besides in-class teaching, (2) I've also been privately tutoring for about two years, and mostly online. I taught individual students as well as small groups.
I've helped students improve their grades, e.g. I received emails from my IB Maths students' parents thanking me for my work that helped improve the students' grades. I've received in general excellent recommendations from my clients and am able to
produce them.
Tutoring Approach
My Specialities include:
1 . My effective visualization process with charts, diagrams, and tables to make things easy for the students.
2. I'm well equipped for tutoring online, as I've done it before and effectively. I've a graphic tablet where I can. I'm a specialist in motivating the students to learn a new concept, for example, negative numbers, group theory or functional analysis. I've worked in industry for 2 years, so I've seen a lot of these concepts being used in real life, so I can help motivate on why (s)he is learning a new concept.
3. In case of competitive exam preparation, I find sample exams from the internet or design them myself. These sample exams are normally shorter than the actual exams but still give the student a head start of what it's like to attend these exams.
IB Mathematics: I focus on understanding the theory and solving problems majority of the problem from the book "Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches"
ACT, SAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and other competitive exams: I give students a lot of problems available on the internet, or recast them in alternative form to improve the student's mathematical thinking. I give a sample test that can be a fraction of the actual test and observe if the student can respect the time limit but still comes up with a good grade.
College and University level mathematics: I motivate the students why (s)he is studying a certain mathematical topic (e.g. probability) in the first place, and when (s)he understands that, the next step is to create visualization and examples from real life. The final step is to start doing abstract mathematics, which becomes easier when the first two steps are accomplished.
ESL: I start with easy topics, in both spoken and written English. I gradually increase the difficulty of the topics and see when is the first moment the student starts to have difficulty. Each student has their own level - I've taught students having from A1 to B2/CA level of English and in each case, I took this bottom-up approach to detect their weaknesses.
Testimonials
"I have been reviewing intermediate statistics and data science material with Susovan. He comes well prepared for classes, balances the big picture and the details well, and asks lots of questions to make sure the student understands material. Highly recommended"
Valera F., Masters in Data Science
"Susovan is a perfect teacher for my 12 grader son who is studying high level mathematics in IB program. He adjusted to the needs my son had for his Calculus unit and identified the knowledge he needs to consolidate. I highly recommend him!"
Parents of Lorenzo B., student of IB Mathematics
"Susovan is an excellent teacher, very proactive in teaching english, I highly recommend him"
Régis L., student of English as a Second Language (ESL)
