Tutoring Experience
With a robust 30-year teaching and engineering career, I've successfully tutored graduate engineers, tutored in Physics, providing a strong industry foundation. As part of a STEM initiative, I mentored yr12 students through a successful EPQ project.
Transitioning into education as a qualified physics teacher, I've taught across mainstream schools from yrs 7 to 13. Despite challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, my online teaching ensured students achieved target grades, offering insights into effective remote learning strategies.
In my teaching role, I lead one-to-one and small group intervention sessions for GCSE physics, both in person and online. Expanding into private tuition, I currently support GCSE/A level and IB students globally, including those with specific learning difficulties, leveraging my experience.
Tutoring Approach
My approach is always student led.
In my experience, some students have difficulty understanding key concepts. In this case a focus on basic ideas, linking topics, using different models and identifying real world examples will prove most successful. Some students may have a good grasp of the concepts but find it difficult to effectively express their ideas using the correct scientific terminology. Here a focus on command words, laws and definitions and practise of longer answer questions is key.
Other students may lack confidence with the mathematical skills required in physics. In this case, breaking down the problem and a structured approach to the solution are the way forward. Building student confidence and self belief are key to success.
There is no single approach any more than there is only one type of student. I see tutoring as a collaboration, where I will work with the student in the way that is most successful for them.
