Tutoring Experience

I bring over 30 years of tutoring and teaching experience, specializing in Mathematics, programming, and test preparation across diverse curricula and age groups. My tutoring expertise includes preparing students for Math competitions such as AMC 8/10 and Kangaroo Math, as well as standardized tests like the SAT and AP exams. I have taught virtually in American high schools and created SAT exam materials. My teaching experience spans roles in China and the USA, including positions as a Math and AP Calculus teacher, Dean of Math, Science, and Technology, and Lead Educator. Additionally, I have developed Python programming curricula and created educational videos and games, earning recognition for my innovative teaching methods. My global teaching background is complemented by extensive work with universities and training centers to support students’ academic and international education goals. I also have almost 10 years of experience helping US university applicants with their applications to university.

Tutoring Approach

I take the time to understand what the student needs help with and identify their current level of knowledge. By asking targeted questions and encouraging them to explain their thought process, I uncover gaps in their understanding and address the root causes of any difficulties they face. I prioritize active learning, ensuring that the sessions are not just about completing homework but about building a solid foundation of skills and knowledge. This involves working collaboratively with the student to tackle challenges and develop strategies to improve their independent study habits, particularly if they struggle to complete homework outside of our sessions.

I firmly believe that tutoring should not be a lecture but an interactive and engaging experience. Instead of delivering long explanations, I guide students to solve problems on their own, fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the material. By making the students do the work themselves, I help them build confidence and take ownership of their learning process. My role is to act as a facilitator, providing guidance, asking questions, and offering feedback to ensure they grasp the concepts thoroughly. This hands-on approach empowers students to become independent learners and succeed in their academic pursuits.
