Tutoring Experience

I graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1975 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and began my teaching career in 1976 as an A-Level Physics teacher at UWC of Southern Africa in Swaziland. After completing a PGCE at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1980, I returned to Waterford kaMhlaba to teach IB Physics when the IB Diploma Programme was introduced. In 1983, I was appointed Head of Science at UWC Adriatic in Italy, where I remained until 2020. Since 1995, I have been an IB examiner, marking Physics papers, and from 1990 to 2018, I also taught Theory of Knowledge. Now retired, I greatly miss the rewarding experience of working with students and sharing my passion for physics.

Tutoring Approach

I begin by identifying their strengths and weaknesses, using the first lesson to assess their understanding of a chosen topic through targeted questioning. Rather than delivering long lectures, I engage students with specific IB-style questions, encouraging them to think critically and articulate their reasoning. If they need help with theory, I provide concise explanations before guiding them through problem-solving. I make extensive use of past IB exam questions to familiarize students with exam formats and techniques. I ensure lessons are dynamic, responsive, and focused on maximizing student progress.
