Tutoring Experience
With over 20 years of teaching experience, I continue to enjoy the subjects I teach just as much as my students do, particularly Psychology and Theory of Knowledge. In addition to working with students during my office hours, I also provide private tutoring to both students within and outside my school community. As an AP Psychology Reader, I stay current with developments in the field and have recently returned from a College Board workshop with updated materials and information on the latest curriculum changes to the syllabus and exam. My expertise allows me to effectively tutor students in IB Psychology and Philosophy, helping them grasp complex concepts and prepare for their assessments with confidence.
Tutoring Approach
My approach to tutoring begins with a personalized conversation aimed at understanding the student’s background and current experience in the subject. I start by asking them to share where they’re coming from academically, their experience with the subject, and a brief inventory of what they already know. I encourage students to express their thoughts openly so I can engage them at their current level of understanding. I also inquire about whether they are in Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), what aspects of the subject they enjoy, and any specific questions or areas they feel they need assistance with. This helps me create a more tailored tutoring session that addresses their unique needs and learning style.
Additionally, I assess their performance through evidence such as test scores, practice marks, and how well they grasp pure content knowledge and skills, especially in multiple-choice questions. I look for trends in their success and work to be strategic and precise in addressing areas for improvement. Regular surveys and check-ins allow me to gauge their knowledge, confidence, and competence as we progress. I rely heavily on the student's ability to articulate what they know, guiding them towards greater mastery of the content while providing targeted support where needed.
