Tutoring Experience

I have had the fortunate opportunity to tutor several students in both IB Mathematics and IB Physics at both HL and SL levels, with students attending the American International School of Johannesburg as well as local schools under the CAPS curriculum in South Africa. In addition to my tutoring experience, I have two years of teaching experience from 2022 to 2023, where I taught at a homeschool in Johannesburg. There, I covered subjects such as Computer Applied Technologies, Mathematical Literacy, Tourism, and the Physics component of Physical Sciences, while also consulting on Mathematics. During this time, I was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the homeschool and was the primary caretaker for nine students in 2022 and seven students in 2023, ensuring both their academic and personal growth.

Tutoring Approach

As a dedicated and experienced tutor, my approach always begins with understanding each student’s unique needs and challenges. I take the time to introduce myself, establish a comfortable learning environment, and ask about the specific problems the student is facing. It’s essential for me to dive into the student’s academic history to pinpoint any knowledge gaps, especially those that may have arisen during the disruptions caused by COVID-19. I carefully identify the areas where they need the most support and tailor my teaching accordingly. After covering the material, I test the student’s understanding by reviewing the theory and giving them practical questions, including past exam papers, to ensure they’ve fully grasped the content.

I strongly believe in using feedback as a powerful tool for improvement. I regularly assess how well students perform on these tests, analyzing their results to see what concepts still need attention. This continuous feedback loop allows me to address any lingering issues and fine-tune my teaching methods to suit their learning style. To keep students engaged, I incorporate real-life examples to make the material more relatable and meaningful. I also use virtual whiteboards and university-level notes to enhance the learning experience, ensuring that lessons are interactive and visually stimulating. This approach not only helps students master the subject but also builds their confidence and interest in the material.
