Hi, my name is Joshua. My expertise encompasses literature from the eighteenth century and the early modern period, focusing on the types of works that would have graced the nightstand of Jane Austen. I have a particular emphasis on Shakespeare, whom I have explored not only as a poet but also as a transformative figure in cultural history.

Tutoring Experience

I have received extensive training as part of my work as a tutor for several companies in the past year.

I also have experience working with young people in a school setting, having volunteered as a teaching assistant and tutor in English at my former school.

I especially enjoy small-group teaching: at its best, it offers a truly transformative space in which to test ideas, build confidence and bolster my students’ expertise and interest in a given subject.

Tutoring Approach

I am confident supporting students with a range of abilities and levels of interest, from A Level to undergraduate, including support for personal statements, interview preparation, admissions tests (the ‘ELAT’ at Oxford and Cambridge), as well as priming my tutees to excel in their school examinations.

I provide students with a high level of theoretical understanding, as well as honing their skills in close analysis of literary works. Both are required at A Level and beyond.

My aim is to encourage my students to think flexibly in response to questions (raised in an exam or at interview), while being guided principally by the words they read on the page of a given novel, play or poem.
