Tutoring Experience

Peer Tutoring @ Thornton Jr. High

I tutored a total of 3-5 middle school students in a span of two years as a freshman and sophomore in high school. My schedule was for one hour a week for the course of the fall semester each year. I would assist these students in any homework (Math, English, History, Science) and afterward helped them study for any tests.

Peer Tutoring @ American High School

As part of my AP Calculus AB class, I tutored students enrolled in Pre-Calculus and Regular Calculus during my flex period. Although it was for extra credit, I enjoyed being able to offer what I could to those who were struggling and encourage them to ask questions.

TA @ ISEB Sunday School

I worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at the ISEB Sunday School for all four years of my high school. Every Sunday morning, for approximately 4 hours, I would aid the teacher in providing students of ages 4-16 with Islamic knowledge by grading, assisting in administrative tasks, and occasionally facilitating lectures. I gained a majority of my teaching experience here, especially after working with students of different age groups.

Tutor @ Mathnasium, Newark campus

I worked as a math tutor at the Mathnasium for the remainder of my senior year of high school. I would check previously completely assignments and assign new ones. I would rotate between 3-5 students and assist them when necessary. My goal was to create a comfortable environment for each student so they would be able to ask any questions and not hold back when they needed a concept clarified.

Personally tutored my younger sisters

As the eldest, I tutored both my sisters growing up from a very young age. Whether it was math or sciences or history, I would always set aside time to answer their questions or check their work. I would quiz them to help them study for tests and helped them discover their learning styles, since both of them were very different learners. The elder of the two is currently attending Santa Clara University as a CS major and the younger is now transferring from a community college to a 4-year institute as a pre-med student.

Tutoring Approach

MCAT: determine test date, understand what kind of learner the student is, help make a personalized schedule with alotted time for content breakdown and scheduled practice exams, enlighten them of the appropriate resources that would most benefit them with respect to their learning style (anki decks, books, etc.), clarify weak content material based off of chapters assigned from the week, walk through sample questions

Chemistry: reach out to student before sessions and inquire about topic of focus, thoroughly review it myself beforehand, create question banks to check their understanding, gather other useful online resources for student, check homework/related assignments

Biology: reach out to student before sessions and inquire about topic of focus, thoroughly review it myself beforehand, create question banks to check their understanding, gather other useful online resources for student, check homework/related assignments
