Tutoring Experience

I have gained extensive experience tutoring secondary school students of a range of ages and abilities over the last four years.

I also have experience guiding sixth form students through the Oxbridge admissions process. I recently worked with an A-Level student who hoped to study at the University of Oxford. Across the course of three months working together it was wonderful to see him progress from achieving chance-level performance on the TSA entrance exam to attaining a pass.

Tutoring Approach

I am passionate about the subjects I teach, and I hope to inspire the same enthusiasm in the students I work with. I aim to foster a supportive and productive lesson environment, as from my own experience as a student I know how important it is to have an encouraging teacher.

I am very flexible in my tuition approach, tailoring my style of teaching to best suit the student. I will spend the first session with a student building an understanding of their goals and specific subject areas that they would like extra support with, and of which methods of learning they find most effective. I can then tailor all further sessions to the needs of the student to make the best use of our time together.

In addition to providing learning materials for tutorial sessions, I am happy to set and/ or to provide detailed feedback on further work to be completed outside of tutorials.

My sessions are designed to result in a strong understanding of subject content and of how to effectively apply this information in an exam setting.

TSA and Oxbridge application

Having recently succeeded in passing through the Oxbridge application process, I have a thorough understanding of all its elements. This places me in an excellent position to help with writing impressive personal statements, preparing for interviews, and revising for entrance exams.
In preparation for the TSA, I will guide the student through problem-solving approaches for different question styles, leaving them confident in their ability to answer any types of question that might appear in the exam. I can also provide guidance and feedback on how to structure a coherent and well-reasoned argument for the essay section of the exam.

I offer practice interviews, in which I will assist the student in learning how to produce strong responses to typical Oxbridge interview questions.

Psychology

I generally tailor sessions to focus on structuring coherent arguments, as this builds up the student’s essay technique while also solidifying their understanding of the subject content.

I have found that challenging students to compose and defend arguments through discussion-based activities is especially useful for enhancing the student’s confidence.

Maths

When preparing material for tutorial sessions, I will collate questions that target gaps in the student’s knowledge, and we may revisit questions from homework exercises that the student had particular difficulty with. We can then work through the problem-solving process together, leaving the student confident in all areas of the subject curriculum.
