Tutoring Experience

As a qualified Science teacher, I bring a robust academic background and exceptional subject expertise, complemented by two years of classroom teaching and six years of private tutoring experience. My expertise spans from Key Stage 3 through A Level. I am dedicated to bolstering students' confidence in Science, guiding them to advance into higher sets at school, and skillfully preparing them to excel in their exams and re-sits. My approach is tailored to each student's unique needs, ensuring they achieve their goals with outstanding results.

Tutoring Approach

I aim to make tutoring sessions as useful and personalised as possible, taking into account my students’ needs. My teaching style is based on our current understanding of how learning actually takes place, so you can expect lots of interleaved retrieval practice with a focus on making the material stick! However, I also strongly believe in making learning fun, so I teach in a relaxed, conversational style using lots of hand-drawn diagrams and worked examples.

Science

There are two things you need to succeed in any exam, especially Science GCSEs and A Levels:

-Robust methods for memorising the specification content, such as active recall and spaced repetition
-A ton of practice in applying your knowledge in unfamiliar situations and contexts (past papers and as many exam questions as you can manage!)
In our tuition sessions I will help you with both of the above, using my experience and tried-and-tested teaching methods to boost your confidence and attainment - and hopefully have some fun along the way!

University applications

Having attended both the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, I am fully aware of the myths surrounding the application process, especially the interviews! I am keen to dispel those myths and help you with writing an excellent personal statement and ace the interviews for Natural Sciences. I can also help you work through NSAA past papers and give you some general tips for approaching the questions.

I believe strongly that for tuition sessions to be effective, a good working relationship needs to be established. In our first session we will get to know each other, work out your strengths and weaknesses and discuss what you would like our sessions to focus on. I will then use the skills and knowledge I have developed through my 3 years of classroom teaching and 6 years of private tutoring experience to help you make progress.

I am flexible in my approach (no two students are the same, so no two tuition sessions should be the same!), but I always come back to techniques that are proven to be effective, such as spaced repetition, active recall and detailed work on exam questions. We will do lots of worked examples to help apply your knowledge and get you exam ready!

What you can expect:

-I teach on my iPad with an Apple Pencil - lots of diagrams, visuals, worked examples - and use other pieces of software to enhance your learning (e.g. Google Docs, collaborative whiteboards). No boring slideshows here!
-All session materials (notes, exam question packs etc.) will be made available to you in a shared Google Drive folder.
-A collaborative approach - I won't lecture at you, but work with you, getting you to start thinking more deeply about the subject and engage actively in your own learning.
-Flexible sessions, in length and in content.
-Exam technique and revision tips throughout.
-Hopefully some fun! (I am known for my cheesy jokes…)
