Tutoring Experience

I am currently a Law finalist at Downing College, University of Cambridge. In October 2020, I successfully passed the Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT) and received offers from several prestigious institutions including Cambridge, London School of Economics (LSE), and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). With over a year of experience in tutoring university Law admissions, I specialize in assisting students worldwide in LNAT preparation and personal statement crafting.

The LNAT, as an aptitude test, evaluates candidates' lawyer-like thinking and working abilities rather than their legal knowledge. It comprises two sections: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs, Section A) which assess verbal reasoning skills, and an essay exercise (Section B) which tests persuasive and argumentative writing abilities. My tutoring approach focuses on enhancing these skills through continuous practice and introducing effective exam techniques, thereby boosting confidence.

Students under my guidance will learn critical thinking, effective elimination methods, and efficient reading strategies. They will also acquire skills in structuring essays, developing strong theses, and addressing nuanced questions. This is achieved through extensive practice tests and essay plan drafting on various topics, which I provide. I review and mark this independent work, followed by detailed feedback discussions during lessons. My interactive teaching methodology encourages student engagement, allowing them to voice concerns and ask questions for a clearer understanding.

Additionally, I have experience in offering tutoring sessions in Higher and Advanced Higher Maths and French to classmates. This included identifying their challenges, providing constructive feedback, solving past paper questions, and helping them create effective revision notes.

Tutoring Approach

I adopt a casual, cooperative and flexible methodology in all the areas I tutor. I want students to actively engage in lessons so I prefer asking questions and encouraging them to talk me through their thought process. Justifying their answers avoids mechanical, repetitive learning and builds their critical thinking.

For school subjects like Maths, students can inform me beforehand of what they wish to improve on (e.g., differentiation, trigonometry etc.) so that I can provide a theoretical explanation of the concept before moving on to some exercises.

For University admissions, I provide an introductory lesson on personal statements and focus on the individual student to help them write a statement that best reflects their personality and passion for their course. For Cambridge Law applicants, I provide essay-writing tips and resources to prepare for their interview.
