Tutoring Experience

Years tutoring GCSE pupils in Geography, with very positive outcomes. I adapted my approach for each student, focusing on key elements of the specification which they were uncomfortable with, and key exam technique which allowed them to answer the questions to the best of their ability.

Despite the fact that they were struggling in their subject before I began to tutor them, they quickly improved, to the point where I was no longer required to tutor some of them as they had progressed so far. I received a lot of positive feedback from their subject teachers. I also mentored students in broader learning techniques, covering the foundations of how to answer questions in across many different topics, for example how to effectively back up an argument and integrate examples into writing.

We also looked at effective exam technique and study skills such as how to successfully revise and how to take useful notes.

Tutoring Approach

In Geography, I have a strong focus on exam technique, teaching students how to most effectively answer the question in the time given. After I am sure that students understand the basic theory behind the topic, I like to focus on using real-world examples as this makes topics far more engaging, and therefore results in far greater knowledge-retention, and understanding of the subject.

In History, the most important aspect for me is that pupils have an extremely good understanding of causality and consequence, which enables me to challenge them to develop convincing arguments on complex topics. It is extremely convincing arguments in this subject which are awarded with the top marks.

In Biology, an understanding of the interconnection of processes inside the body is key to success. Good exam technique, with an understanding of what is required for each type of question, is key to making sure that a student’s subject knowledge comes across clearly, and that time during exams is used effectively, and not wasted on information which is not relevant.
