Tutoring Experience

An experienced tutor, teaching assistant, and science nerd, I am extremely passionate about the sciences and love helping other students grasp difficult concepts and succeed in their academic endeavors. Having graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in biochemistry, I understand what it takes to excel in the biological and chemical sciences. I have over five years of tutoring experience in various subjects, including general chemistry, genetics, Spanish, and multivariable calculus. I have worked with both high school and college students to develop personalized study plans that are conducive to academic success. The positive feedback I have received from those that I have tutored has deepened my love for working both with students who are struggling academically and those that simply want to gain a more nuanced grasp of critical scientific concepts.

Tutoring Approach

Life Sciences: Biology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry Tuition Approach

My approach to tutoring for the life sciences is highly individualised and depends on the exact academic needs of the student. For my first session, I seek to understand the student’s goals as well as their concerns about the study material. From there, we develop a proper plan to address the student’s challenges and growth points. Though there are range of approaches one could take when helping students master the life sciences, some strategies I have found useful include going over problem sets, working on additional problems selected from my own problem banks, and reviewing fundamental concepts that students must grasp in order to reach their full academic potential.

MCAT Tuition Approach

Having self-studied for the MCAT, I know what it takes to attain success on this difficult exam. I hope to help students develop test-taking strategies, improve their understanding of key concepts, and improve the critical thinking skills that are so instrumental to success on the exam. I understand that preparing for this exam requires a personalised approach, and I hope to help students develop both their command of the test material and the skills that will ensure they excel.

My general approach to tutoring to the MCAT involves coming up with a personalised study plan, reviewing key concepts (especially those students are the least comfortable with), and working together to go over a wide variety of MCAT-like problems that mirror the difficulty and breadth of the actual test. I also seek to help students review practice exams.

Math: Pre-algebra to Multivariable Calculus

Having tutored students in a variety of math courses ranging from pre-algebra to multivariable calculus, I have come to understand that success in a math course is best achieved by utilizing a problem-solving tuition approach. In addition to reviewing key mathematical concepts, I like to spend time with students going over missed problems from their own coursework. In addition, I like to supply my own problems that mirror the difficulty of exam-type questions.

ACT and SAT Tuition Approach

Having self-studied for both the ACT and SAT, I have firsthand experience in developing successful approaches for these important college entrance exams. I first seek to identify students’ growth points by trying to understand their challenges and strengths.From there, I seek to help students develop a personalised, long-term study plan. Much of my time tutoring these exams involves reviewing practice problems (both those that students encounter and ones I supply), reviewing practice tests, and identifying potential test-taking strategies that make student success much more likely.

Spanish Language and Literature Tuition Approach

A fluent Spanish speaker who has lived in Madrid for an extended period of time, I enjoy working with students to improve their command of written and spoken Spanish. The exact approach to tutoring Spanish depends on the student’s grasp of the language, though in the past I have helped students review key grammatical concepts, edited student essays, worked with students to improve their comprehension of written Spanish, and engaged in conversations with students to improve their fluency, among other approaches.
