Tutoring Experience

I have over six years of experience as a private tutor, specialising in preparing students for the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) and Oxbridge admissions, including interviews. My expertise extends to helping students understand the creative problem-solving skills required for the MAT, with a proven track record of guiding students through resits and entrance exam challenges.

In addition to my private tutoring, I have taught Mathematics to undergraduates and master’s students at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, providing in-depth feedback and supplementary instruction. Several of my university students have sought my private tutoring for further guidance, particularly for entrance tests like MAT.

My work with resitting university students has also been particularly rewarding, helping them not only pass their exams but build confidence in their mathematical abilities for future studies.

Tutoring Approach

Preparing for the MAT requires creativity and precision, and I tailor my teaching to address these challenges. I emphasise building a deep understanding of problem-solving techniques while ensuring students are comfortable with the test’s unique format. My approach focuses on developing intuitive strategies and effective exam skills, helping students overcome the initial hurdle of tackling unfamiliar problem types.

To support MAT preparation, I use a carefully curated set of illustrative exercises and practical examples to enhance familiarity with creative arguments. I prioritise helping students find the ‘hook’ to begin solving problems independently, a skill often underdeveloped in traditional school mathematics but crucial for MAT success.

Testimonials

“A teacher who does not understand can explain the topic only one way -- as it is in the book. Chris can explain every topic in a few different ways, increasing probability that the student understands"
