Tutoring Experience
I have experience in tutoring mathematics from GCSE and A-Level all the way up to the difficult Cambridge STEP admissions exams, and am keen to use my knowledge to help others. I’m familiar with the mathematics admissions procedures for most universities, having gone through the process myself, and hence am in an excellent position to guide others through it.
Tutoring Approach
Mathematics
When teaching mathematics, I believe that doing a lot of practice is the best way to learn; it’s how I’ve always studied the subject, from GCSE all the way up to university level.
I understand the common issues students have with maths, and tailor my teaching to the needs of each individual student.
When teaching GCSE and A level, I like to first go over any conceptual issues students may have, before moving on to example questions.
Going through examples can often uncover misunderstandings, as well as provide clarity, and hence a balance of both approaches is required.
University Admissions
The work I set varies depending on the particular university, and initial level of the student. Since the questions found on admissions tests such as the MAT and STEP are so different to maths taught at school, it is imperative to go through lots of past paper questions.
This ensures the student is best prepared to tackle the unseen material which comes up on these exams. My teaching style centres on independent thinking; if simply given the answer to a question, the value in solving it oneself is lost, as is the potential to learn from it in the future. As practice questions are sometimes limited for these assessments, it is very important to get the most out of each available past paper.
Oxbridge
I can provide mock interviews. Verbalising your thought processes on maths problems is something not many interviewees have opportunity to do at school and is something expected in these interviews. It is normal and expected to find this difficult, but practicing beforehand is very useful to build confidence and fluency for the interview.
