Tutoring Experience

I began my teaching career in 1995 after graduating from the University of Toronto and obtaining my Intermediate and Senior Teaching Certification from the University of Maine. With an Honours BA in History and English Minor, I specialized in English, History, and Social Studies disciplines. Prior to full-time teaching, I worked as both a tutor and occasional teacher.

Throughout my career spanning from 1995 to 2023, I taught ESL, English at all levels, and various Social Studies courses including Politics, Sociology, Geography, and Anthropology. My main expertise lies in History across all levels and subjects. In the last six years, I acquired IB training in California and taught IB History grades 11 and 12, also serving as an IA mentor for IB students.

During my teaching tenure, I actively participated in numerous extracurricular projects and events. I coached various sports teams, organized school assemblies, and coordinated field trips and guest speaker events to enrich students' learning experiences. I initiated and led a debate team and history club at our school. Retiring last year, I felt fulfilled reflecting on my teaching career, having formed strong bonds with many students.

Continuing as a tutor after retirement, I work independently and with tutoring companies, engaging with students of diverse backgrounds and levels, particularly IB history and English students. Recently obtaining my TEFL qualification, I enhance my ability to work with ESL students and adults.

Excited to continue tutoring online, I aim to foster academic success and build meaningful learning relationships with students from various backgrounds. With extensive experience tutoring students of all ages and levels, my expertise lies in history, particularly in preparing IB History students for success on Papers 1, 2, and 3. Additionally, I assist ESL students, adults, and new Canadian Chinese students in English and Social Studies courses, helping them adapt to the Canadian curriculum.

I prioritize personalizing lessons and fostering a strong connection with my students.

On online platforms, breaking down barriers and comprehending the unique needs of each student is crucial. I tailor my lessons accordingly and actively engage with students, valuing their feedback to ensure optimal clarity. Establishing a two-way learning model is vital, where students feel empowered to voice their questions and actively collaborate towards meeting their learning goals.

This approach cultivates an environment where students feel supported and encouraged to participate fully in their educational journey.
