Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experience tutoring and teaching in diverse educational settings. Since 2019, I have tutored IB, GCSE, and A-level math and computer science students while also teaching English to Chinese students of all levels. Prior to that, I worked as a K-12 Technology Integration Specialist at The American School of Madrid (2013-2017) and taught IB Math and Computer Science there (2011-2013). My teaching journey includes roles as an IB Computer Science teacher at The International School Manila (2008-2011) and Koç High School in Istanbul (2006-2008). Earlier in my career, I taught English at the Schoolhouse Language Centre in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2000-2003), further broadening my international teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is highly personalized and centered around understanding each student's unique needs. I begin by asking students what specific areas they are struggling with or looking for help in, as this allows me to target their most pressing concerns first. For those who are more reserved or unsure about their needs, I come prepared with a general lesson plan and work to uncover their weaknesses as we progress. After each session, I make detailed notes on the topics we cover, which helps track progress and identify areas for further practice. I also use past papers to scaffold answers, guiding students through the process of applying their knowledge effectively.

I specialize in one-on-one tutoring, which allows me to focus on each student's individual learning pace, something often hard to achieve in a standard classroom setting. My goal is to encourage students to take the lead during lessons by working through practice questions while I provide guidance and support. This active learning approach builds their confidence and problem-solving skills. Having experienced learning in a second language myself through French immersion, I have a deep empathy for students navigating subjects in a non-native language. I am fluent in French and also speak intermediate Mandarin and Spanish, which helps me connect with and support students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
