If a process performs a wait operation on a semaphore and its value is positive, the semaphore is decremented, and the process continues. If the semaphore value is zero, the process is blocked until the resource becomes available (signalled by another process).

Mutexes, short for mutual exclusion objects, are a more straightforward synchronisation tool used to ensure that only one thread accesses a critical section of code at a time. They are essentially binary semaphores, used where there is a need to enforce exclusive access to a single resource or critical section. When a thread acquires a mutex, no other thread can enter the critical section until the mutex is released.

Both semaphores and mutexes are vital in avoiding concurrency-related issues like deadlocks and ensuring a coordinated approach to resource sharing, thereby maintaining system stability and reliability.

Process priority is a crucial factor in process scheduling within an operating system, influencing the order and frequency with which processes are allocated CPU time. Each process is assigned a priority level, which determines its relative importance compared to other processes. High-priority processes are typically allocated CPU time before lower-priority ones. Disk thrashing is a condition in an operating system where the system spends more time swapping processes and data in and out of memory than executing processes. This situation typically arises when there is insufficient physical memory to hold all the currently running processes, leading the system to constantly swap data between the RAM and the disk, severely degrading performance.

Disk thrashing is directly related to process management, especially in the context of memory management and scheduling. Context switching allows the CPU to switch its focus from one process to another, enabling multiple processes to share a single CPU effectively. The importance of context switching lies in its ability to enhance the responsiveness of the system.
