Submitting your application to Harvard
There are three distinct systems you can use to apply to Harvard as a student from India. Each of these is equally valid and Harvard does not accept more or less students from any of these sources. You can either apply using the Common Application, the Coalition Application, or the Universal College Application. If you use the Common Application pathway, you need to bear in mind that you need to submit an application before additional supplementary materials. You won’t be able to add your teacher reports until you’ve submitted the first stage of the application. If you need more information on this, the Common Application FAQ will have you covered!
What do I need to include in my application for Harvard?
When applying to Harvard as a student from India, you’ll be following almost exactly the same process as a U.S.-based student. You’ll need to submit the following information:
- Common Application / Coalition Application / Universal Collage Application
- SAT or ACT scores (with or without the essay portion)
- Teacher evaluations and academic transcript
- Personal essay
- Letters of recommendation

What are teacher evaluations and academic transcripts?
A teacher evaluation is a short letter of recommendation declaring your excellence. Harvard will ask two teachers from your school to supply these during your application process. Be sure to ask teachers that know you well and understand your academic potential to fill in this segment of your application. Your academic transcript will also need to be sent to Harvard. If you are applying early, you may not yet have your final grades. Due to this, Harvard asks for a midyear school report from your school. Once you have finished school, you will then need to submit your final school report. This will be a complete documentation of all the grades you have achieved at school.
What is a personal essay when applying to Harvard?
Many colleges in the United States require a personal essay attached to your application. This will either answer a question proposed by the institution or be a reflective piece on your life. Consider the personal essay an opportunity to write inventively. Try to think of an eye-catching story or unique opinion you want to discuss further. This is your chance to show off your creativity, something that an academic transcript often misses out. Specifically for Harvard, you will need to write one long essay without a word limit and two 150-word essays. These can range in title and topic, so be creative and have fun! If you want to see some Harvard supplementary question prompts, this is the best place to do so.
Do I need to take the TOEFL if I want to get into Harvard from India?
While you must have a strong knowledge of the English language to thrive at Harvard, it is not a requirement that you take the TOEFL. However, if you are a non-native English speaker, it is a good idea to take a TOEFL exam and submit your scores. This will ensure that Harvard understands that you have a fantastic understanding of English and will not question this in your application. Unlike Oxford University, which accepts several forms of language proficiency exams, Harvard will only accept TOEFL scores.
