Neutrons are neutral particles, meaning they have no charge. They also reside in the nucleus of the atom. The number of neutrons can vary among atoms of the same element, leading to different isotopes. For instance, carbon-12 and carbon-14 are isotopes of carbon, with 6 and 8 neutrons respectively. The sum of protons and neutrons gives the atomic mass of an atom.

Electrons are negatively charged particles. They are much smaller and lighter than protons and neutrons. Electrons orbit the nucleus in energy levels or shells. The arrangement of electrons in these shells determines how an atom behaves in chemical reactions. For example, an atom with one electron in its outermost shell, like hydrogen, tends to donate that electron in reactions.

In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, balancing the positive and negative charges. However, atoms can gain or lose electrons to become ions. For example, a sodium atom can lose one electron to become a positively charged sodium ion.

Understanding the structure of atoms and their components is fundamental to the study of physics and chemistry. It helps explain the properties of elements, the nature of chemical reactions, and the structure of the universe at the most basic level.
