How does sound speed vary in solids, liquids, and gases?

Sound speed varies in different mediums, being fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases.

In gases, the particles are spread out and move freely. This means that vibrations are passed along less efficiently, resulting in a slower speed of sound. In air at room temperature, sound travels at a speed of about 343 metres per second.

It's also important to note that the speed of sound can be affected by factors such as temperature and pressure. For example, increasing the temperature of a gas will increase the speed of sound in it, as the particles move more quickly and can therefore pass vibrations along more quickly. Similarly, increasing the pressure in a solid or liquid will increase the speed of sound, as the particles are pushed closer together and can therefore pass vibrations along more quickly.
