How do the phases of the Moon occur?

The Moon orbits the Earth approximately once every 27.3 days, a period known as a sidereal month. As it orbits, different portions of the Moon are illuminated by the Sun, creating the various phases we see from Earth. The Moon does not produce its own light, so the phases are entirely dependent on the position of the Moon relative to the Earth and the Sun.

The first phase is the New Moon, where the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. The side of the Moon facing the Earth is not illuminated, making it virtually invisible from our perspective. As the Moon moves in its orbit, a small, crescent-shaped sliver of the Moon becomes visible. This is known as the Waxing Crescent phase.

The First Quarter phase is when the right half of the Moon is illuminated. This is followed by the Waxing Gibbous phase, where more than half but not all of the Moon is illuminated. The Full Moon phase is when the entire face of the Moon is illuminated, as the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun.

After the Full Moon, the Moon starts to wane, or decrease in illumination. The Waning Gibbous phase is when more than half but not all of the Moon is illuminated. This is followed by the Last Quarter, where the left half of the Moon is illuminated. The Waning Crescent phase is the final phase before the cycle starts again with a New Moon.
