This observation was inconsistent with the 'plum pudding' model. Rutherford concluded that the atom must have a small, dense, positively charged centre that could repel the alpha particles. This centre is what we now call the nucleus. The electrons, he proposed, must be orbiting this nucleus, much like planets orbit the sun. This model is known as the nuclear model of the atom.
