By coiling the wire into a solenoid (a cylindrical coil of wire), the magnetic field becomes concentrated inside the coil, creating a strong electromagnet. Another key difference is that the magnetic field of an electromagnet can be turned on and off, whereas the magnetic field of a bar magnet is always present.
