The different types of isomerism are structural isomerism and stereoisomerism.
Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, occurs when compounds with the same molecular formula have different connections among their atoms. This type of isomerism can be further divided into five subtypes: chain isomerism, functional group isomerism, position isomerism, tautomeric isomerism, and ring-chain isomerism. Chain isomerism occurs when the carbon chain is arranged differently. Functional group isomerism happens when the functional group of the compound changes. Position isomerism is when the functional group changes position on the carbon chain. Tautomeric isomerism is a special case of functional group isomerism and involves a rapid shift of a hydrogen atom between two resonance forms. Ring-chain isomerism occurs when the compound can exist as a cyclic (ring) or acyclic (chain) structure.
Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, occurs when compounds with the same molecular formula and the same structural formula have different spatial arrangements of atoms. This type of isomerism can be further divided into two subtypes: geometric isomerism and optical isomerism. Geometric isomerism, also known as cis-trans isomerism, occurs when there is restricted rotation somewhere in the molecule, leading to different spatial arrangements. Optical isomerism occurs when a molecule can exist in two forms that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like your left and right hands. These are called enantiomers and their existence is due to a carbon atom bonded to four different groups, known as a chiral centre.
Understanding these types of isomerism is crucial in chemistry as they can significantly affect the physical and chemical properties of the compounds, including boiling point, melting point, and reactivity.
