Catalysts speed up physical and chemical changes without being consumed in the process.
Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of a chemical or physical change by lowering the energy barrier, or activation energy, required for the change to occur. They do this by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. Importantly, catalysts are not consumed in the reaction, meaning they can be used repeatedly to catalyse the same reaction.
In chemical reactions, catalysts work by either breaking down complex molecules into simpler ones, or by combining simpler molecules to form more complex ones. They do this by interacting with the reactants to form an intermediate compound, which then breaks down to give the products and regenerate the catalyst. This process is known as a catalytic cycle.
In physical changes, such as changes of state, catalysts can also play a role. For example, in the process of melting or boiling, a catalyst can help to overcome the energy barrier that prevents the molecules from moving from one state to another. This can be particularly useful in industrial processes where large amounts of energy are required to bring about these changes.
Catalysts are incredibly important in many areas of science and industry. In the chemical industry, for example, catalysts are used to speed up reactions that would otherwise take too long or require too much energy to be economically viable. They are also crucial in biological systems, where enzymes (which are a type of catalyst) speed up the chemical reactions that sustain life.
In summary, catalysts play a crucial role in both physical and chemical changes by lowering the energy barrier for these changes to occur, thereby speeding up the rate at which they happen.
