Functional groups are prioritised in compound naming based on their importance and the IUPAC nomenclature rules.
In the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) system of nomenclature, functional groups are prioritised based on their importance. This is determined by the complexity of the group and its impact on the chemical behaviour of the compound. The functional group with the highest priority is considered the principal functional group and it is this group that gives the compound its main name.
The priority order of functional groups is as follows: carboxylic acids, esters, acid halides, amides, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, amines, ethers, alkenes, alkynes, and alkanes. For example, if a compound contains both an alcohol and a carboxylic acid group, the carboxylic acid group would be considered the principal functional group because it has a higher priority. The alcohol group would then be named as a substituent.
When naming a compound, the principal functional group is indicated by the suffix of the compound name. For instance, the suffix '-ol' is used for alcohols, '-al' for aldehydes, and '-oic acid' for carboxylic acids. Substituent functional groups are indicated by prefixes. For example, an alcohol group as a substituent would be indicated by the prefix 'hydroxy-'.
In cases where there are multiple functional groups of the same type, numerical prefixes are used to indicate their positions. For example, a compound with two alcohol groups would be named as a 'diol'. The positions of the alcohol groups would be indicated by numbers, such as '1,2-diol' or '1,3-diol', depending on their positions on the carbon chain.
Remember, the rules of IUPAC nomenclature are designed to provide a clear and consistent way of naming chemical compounds. Understanding these rules and the priority order of functional groups is key to correctly naming compounds.
