There are 20 different types of amino acids that can be combined to make a protein. The sequence of amino acids determines each protein’s unique 3-dimensional structure and its specific function.
Our bodies can make some amino acids, but there are nine that can't be produced internally. These are known as essential amino acids and we must get them from our diet. Without an adequate supply of these essential amino acids, the body can't synthesise the proteins it needs to function properly. Furthermore, proteins provide a source of energy. Each gram of protein provides about 4 calories of energy. However, the body prefers to use carbohydrates and fats for energy before it uses protein. When dietary intake of these nutrients is insufficient, the body will break down proteins to meet its energy needs.
