The Krebs cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle or tricarboxylic acid cycle, is a series of chemical reactions that occur within the mitochondria of cells. It is a central part of aerobic respiration, the process by which cells generate energy in the presence of oxygen. The cycle is named after Hans Krebs, who first identified it in 1937.
The Krebs cycle begins when a molecule of acetyl CoA, derived from carbohydrates, fats, or proteins, combines with a molecule of oxaloacetate to form citrate. This citrate is then systematically converted through a series of reactions back into oxaloacetate, in the process releasing two molecules of carbon dioxide. This cycle of reactions is repeated for each molecule of acetyl CoA that enters the cycle.
The primary role of the Krebs cycle in aerobic respiration is to generate energy-rich molecules, including NADH and FADH2. These molecules are then used in the electron transport chain, the final stage of aerobic respiration, to generate ATP, the cell's main source of energy. The Krebs cycle itself does not generate much ATP directly, but the NADH and FADH2 it produces are crucial for the energy-rich final stages of respiration.
In addition to generating energy-rich molecules, the Krebs cycle also plays a role in the production of carbon dioxide, one of the end products of aerobic respiration. The carbon atoms in the acetyl CoA molecule are eventually released as carbon dioxide in the Krebs cycle. This carbon dioxide is then expelled from the cell and eventually exhaled by the organism.
