The esophagus, also known as the gullet, plays a crucial role in the digestive system. It is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. When we swallow, the food is pushed into the esophagus from the mouth. The upper esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscles at the top of the esophagus, relaxes to allow the food to enter. Once the food is in the esophagus, peristalsis begins. These rhythmic, wave-like contractions of the muscular wall of the esophagus propel the food downwards.

At the lower end of the esophagus, there is another muscular ring known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES relaxes to allow the food to pass into the stomach and then contracts again to prevent the stomach's acidic contents from flowing back into the esophagus. This backflow, if it occurs, can cause a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
