Each strand is made up of a sequence of nucleotides, which are the basic building blocks of DNA. A nucleotide consists of a sugar molecule, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. The order of these bases determines the genetic code, but it's the hydrogen bonds between the bases that hold the two strands of DNA together. Specifically, adenine forms two hydrogen bonds with thymine, and cytosine forms three hydrogen bonds with guanine. This is known as complementary base pairing. The hydrogen bonds are weak enough to allow the DNA strands to separate during processes such as DNA replication and transcription, but strong enough to hold the strands together under normal conditions.
In addition to maintaining the double helix structure, hydrogen bonds also play a role in the stability of the DNA molecule. The more hydrogen bonds a DNA molecule has, the more stable it is. This is why GC-rich regions of DNA, which have three hydrogen bonds per base pair compared to the two in AT-rich regions, are more stable.
