The electron transport chain (ETC) is a series of protein complexes located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It plays a crucial role in cellular respiration, a process that converts the energy stored in nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main energy currency of cells. The ETC is the final stage of respiration, following glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, and it is where most of the ATP is produced.

During the ETC, electrons are transferred from electron carriers, such as NADH and FADH2, to oxygen, the final electron acceptor. This transfer of electrons is coupled with the pumping of protons (H+) across the inner mitochondrial membrane, creating a proton gradient. This gradient is then used by ATP synthase to synthesise ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate. This process is known as oxidative phosphorylation.

The ETC is significant because it produces around 34 of the 38 ATP molecules generated per glucose molecule during cellular respiration. Without the ETC, cells would rely solely on the relatively inefficient processes of glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, which together only produce 4 ATP molecules per glucose molecule. Therefore, the ETC is essential for meeting the energy demands of cells.

Furthermore, the ETC is also involved in the regulation of cellular metabolism and the production of heat, which is important for maintaining body temperature in homeothermic organisms. It also generates water as a by-product, which is vital for cellular hydration and various biochemical reactions. Therefore, the ETC is not only significant for energy production, but also for maintaining cellular and organismal homeostasis.
