The process of pollen production takes place within the anther. The anther contains microsporangia, which are specialised structures where the development of microspores, or pollen grains, occurs. These microspores undergo meiosis, a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell. These haploid cells mature into pollen grains, which contain the male gametes.

The role of the stamen in plant reproduction is not just limited to the production of pollen. The stamen also plays a crucial role in the dispersal of pollen. This is typically achieved through a process known as pollination, where pollen grains are transferred from the anther of a stamen to the stigma of a pistil, either within the same flower or another flower. This can occur through various mechanisms, including wind, water, or animal vectors.

Once the pollen grain reaches the stigma, it germinates to form a pollen tube that grows down into the ovary. The male gametes then travel down this tube to fertilise the female gametes, resulting in the formation of a seed. Thus, the stamen plays a vital role in both the production and delivery of male gametes in plant reproduction.
