What is the role of capillaries in gas exchange?

Capillaries, the smallest and most numerous of the blood vessels, form an intricate network throughout the body. Their primary function is to facilitate the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and the body's tissues. This is particularly important in the process of respiration, where oxygen needs to be delivered to the cells for metabolic processes and carbon dioxide, a waste product, needs to be removed.

The walls of capillaries are extremely thin, only one cell thick, which allows for the efficient diffusion of gases. Oxygen, carried in the blood by red blood cells, diffuses across the capillary walls and into the surrounding tissues. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, produced as a waste product by cellular respiration, diffuses from the tissues into the capillaries. This process is driven by concentration gradients, with each gas moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

The capillaries' extensive network and close proximity to every cell in the body ensure that all cells are adequately supplied with oxygen and can efficiently dispose of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the slow speed at which blood flows through capillaries allows sufficient time for gas exchange to occur.

In the lungs, a similar process occurs but in reverse. Here, oxygen diffuses from the air in the lung alveoli into the capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli, from where it is exhaled. This process of gas exchange in the lungs is known as external respiration.
