The influx of calcium ions causes synaptic vesicles, which are small sacs filled with neurotransmitters, to fuse with the presynaptic membrane. This fusion process, known as exocytosis, releases the neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitters then bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, transmitting the signal across the synapse.
Without calcium ions, this process would not occur. The calcium ions act as a key trigger for the release of neurotransmitters, effectively facilitating communication between neurons. This is why calcium ions are so vital in neurotransmission. They ensure that the signal is passed on, allowing the nervous system to function properly.

After the neurotransmitters have transmitted their signal, they are often taken back up into the presynaptic neuron to be reused. This process, known as reuptake, is also influenced by calcium ions.
