The Calvin cycle, also known as the light-independent or dark reactions, is a vital part of photosynthesis, the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy in the form of glucose. This cycle is named after Melvin Calvin, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on it.
The Calvin cycle takes place in the stroma of the chloroplasts, the site of photosynthesis in plant cells. It is a set of chemical reactions that uses carbon dioxide, ATP (adenosine triphosphate), and NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) to produce glucose. ATP and NADPH are energy-rich compounds produced in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis.
The Calvin cycle is a cyclic process, meaning it begins and ends with the same molecule, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). The cycle starts with the fixation of carbon dioxide onto RuBP, a process catalysed by the enzyme RuBisCO. This results in an unstable six-carbon compound that quickly breaks down into two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. These molecules are then converted into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P), a simple sugar, through a series of reactions that require ATP and NADPH. One molecule of G3P leaves the cycle to be used in the synthesis of glucose and other organic compounds, while the remaining G3P molecules are recycled to regenerate RuBP, allowing the cycle to continue.
The Calvin cycle is essential for life on Earth as it is the primary pathway for the fixation of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into organic compounds. It is also the process by which plants and other photosynthetic organisms produce the glucose they need for growth and reproduction. Without the Calvin cycle, these organisms would not be able to convert the energy from sunlight into a form they can use, and life as we know it would not exist.
