A neurone, or nerve cell, is primarily composed of a cell body, dendrites, an axon, and axon terminals.
A neurone, also known as a nerve cell, is the fundamental unit of the nervous system. It is specialised to transmit information throughout the body. The basic structure of a neurone includes several key components. The cell body, also known as the soma, contains the nucleus and other organelles, and is the metabolic centre of the cell. It is responsible for maintaining the life of the cell and carries out all the normal cellular functions.
Radiating out from the cell body are short, branch-like structures called dendrites. These are the primary sites for receiving signals from other neurones. The dendrites convey these electrical or chemical signals towards the cell body. The number of dendrites varies from neurone to neurone, but their primary function remains the same - to receive and transmit signals to the cell body.
The axon is a long, slender projection that conducts electrical impulses away from the neurone's cell body. It can be thought of as the neurone's output system. The axon can extend a considerable distance from the cell body and can branch out to communicate with multiple target cells. The axon is insulated by a myelin sheath, which is a fatty layer that helps speed up the transmission of nerve impulses.
At the end of the axon are axon terminals, which are small swellings. These terminals are responsible for transmitting the neurone's signal across synapses, the tiny gaps between neurones or between a neurone and its target cell. The axon terminals release chemical messengers, known as neurotransmitters, into the synapse, which then bind to receptors on the target cell, thereby transmitting the signal.
