Nitrogen fixation is primarily carried out by certain types of bacteria and archaea, known as diazotrophs. These microorganisms have a special enzyme called nitrogenase that can break the strong bond of N2 molecules and convert them into ammonia (NH3). This process requires a lot of energy, which the bacteria get from their metabolism. The ammonia is then converted into other nitrogenous compounds that can be used by plants.
There are two main types of nitrogen-fixing bacteria: free-living bacteria, which live in the soil or water and fix nitrogen independently, and symbiotic bacteria, which live in the root nodules of leguminous plants and fix nitrogen in exchange for carbohydrates from the plant. The most well-known example of symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria is Rhizobium, which forms a mutualistic relationship with legumes like peas, beans, and clover.
In addition to biological nitrogen fixation, a significant amount of nitrogen is also fixed by lightning. The high temperature and pressure of a lightning strike can break the N2 molecules and allow them to react with oxygen and water to form nitrates and nitrites. These nitrogenous compounds can then be washed into the soil by rain, where they can be used by plants.
