This process relies on the concentration gradient between the water in the soil and the water inside the root hair cells. If the soil is too dry, the concentration gradient is reduced, and water absorption becomes less efficient. Conversely, if the soil is too wet, the roots may become waterlogged and oxygen-starved, inhibiting their ability to absorb water.

Temperature also plays a crucial role. As with many biological processes, water absorption is temperature-dependent. Higher temperatures can increase the rate of water absorption as they speed up the metabolic processes involved.
