One of the most common examples of osmosis in real life is the absorption of water by plant roots from the soil. This process is vital for the survival of plants as it allows them to take in the water needed for photosynthesis and other metabolic activities. The water in the soil has a higher water potential than the root cells, so water moves into the roots by osmosis.
Another example of osmosis in real life is the functioning of our kidneys. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and regulating the body's water balance. They do this by reabsorbing water from the filtrate (the liquid that has been filtered out of the blood) back into the blood. This process is driven by osmosis, as the concentration of solutes in the blood is higher than in the filtrate, causing water to move from the filtrate back into the blood.
Lastly, osmosis is also responsible for the hydration of cells in our bodies. Our cells are surrounded by a semi-permeable membrane that allows water to pass through. If the concentration of solutes inside the cell is higher than outside, water will move into the cell to balance out the concentrations. This is why drinking water is so important for our health, as it helps to maintain the right balance of water in our cells and prevents them from becoming dehydrated.
