Physiological adaptations are changes in an organism's metabolic processes, which allow them to survive in extreme temperatures. For example, some bacteria and archaea, known as extremophiles, have enzymes that function optimally in extreme heat or cold. These enzymes allow them to carry out essential metabolic processes, such as DNA replication and protein synthesis, which would be impossible for other organisms in such conditions. Similarly, some animals can enter a state of hibernation or torpor, slowing their metabolic rate to conserve energy during periods of extreme cold or heat.
Behavioural adaptations involve changes in an organism's behaviour to cope with extreme temperatures. For instance, desert animals, such as the fennec fox, are nocturnal, meaning they are active during the night and rest during the day to avoid the extreme heat. In contrast, emperor penguins in Antarctica huddle together to share body heat and reduce exposure to the cold.
Structural adaptations are physical features that help an organism survive in extreme temperatures. For example, many desert animals have large ears or other body parts to increase their surface area and promote heat loss. On the other hand, animals living in extremely cold environments, like polar bears, have a thick layer of blubber for insulation against the cold. Some plants in hot climates have thick, waxy leaves to reduce water loss through transpiration.
