Water molecules naturally move to balance this gradient, passing through the cell membranes and into the cells of the colon. This is the process of osmosis.
The absorbed water is then transported into the bloodstream, where it is distributed to the rest of the body. This process is vital for maintaining the body's fluid balance and for the proper functioning of cells and organs. Without this absorption process, the body would lose a significant amount of water with each bowel movement, leading to dehydration.
In addition to osmosis, the large intestine also uses active transport to absorb water. This involves the use of energy to move ions against their concentration gradient, which in turn influences the movement of water. Sodium ions are actively transported into the colon cells, increasing the solute concentration and encouraging more water to move into the cells via osmosis.
