Xerophytes are plants that have adapted to survive in environments with limited water availability, such as deserts or arctic tundra. Structural adaptations refer to physical changes in the plant's body that help it conserve water. For example, many xerophytes have thick, waxy cuticles that reduce water loss through transpiration. Some have small, narrow leaves or even no leaves at all, minimising the surface area exposed to the sun and wind, which can speed up water loss. Others have developed extensive root systems that can reach deep into the ground to access water sources, or wide, shallow roots that can absorb any available surface water quickly.
Physiological adaptations involve changes in the plant's internal processes to improve water conservation. For instance, some xerophytes can alter their photosynthetic pathways to minimise water loss. They use a process called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), which allows them to open their stomata (small pores on the leaf surface) at night when it's cooler and less windy, reducing water loss. They can also store water in their tissues, such as in succulent plants like cacti.
Behavioural adaptations are changes in the plant's habits or lifestyle to cope with water scarcity. For example, some xerophytes are dormant during dry periods and only grow during the rainy season. Others, like the desert marigold, have leaves that can turn or fold to reduce their exposure to the sun, thereby reducing water loss.
