Phloem cells, also known as sieve tube elements, are specialised cells that play a crucial role in the process of translocation, which is the movement of soluble organic materials within a plant. These cells are elongated, tube-like structures that are arranged end-to-end to form a continuous system of conduits. They are responsible for the transport of sugars, primarily sucrose, and other nutrients produced during photosynthesis from the leaves (source) to other parts of the plant such as roots, stems, and fruits (sink).
The process of translocation in phloem cells is driven by pressure-flow hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, sugars produced in the leaves are actively transported into the phloem cells, creating a region of high sugar concentration (high osmotic pressure). This causes water to move into the phloem cells from adjacent xylem vessels by osmosis, generating a pressure gradient. The pressure forces the sugar solution to flow down the phloem towards regions of lower pressure, such as roots and other non-photosynthesising parts of the plant.
Phloem cells are uniquely adapted for this function. They lack a nucleus and other typical cell organelles, which allows for more space to accommodate the flow of nutrients. Their end walls, known as sieve plates, have pores that facilitate the movement of the sugar solution between cells. Companion cells, adjacent to the sieve tube elements, help in the loading and unloading of sugars into the phloem.
In summary, phloem cells, through their unique structure and the pressure-flow mechanism, facilitate the process of translocation, ensuring the distribution of vital nutrients to all parts of the plant.
