Hormones play a crucial role in maintaining our sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm. This internal clock, which operates on a roughly 24-hour cycle, is influenced by various hormones produced in the body. Two key hormones involved in this process are melatonin and cortisol.

Melatonin, often referred to as the 'sleep hormone', is produced by the pineal gland in the brain. Its production is influenced by light exposure. As daylight fades, the pineal gland increases melatonin production, signalling to the body that it's time to sleep. Conversely, as light increases in the morning, melatonin production decreases, indicating it's time to wake up. Therefore, melatonin plays a significant role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.

Cortisol, on the other hand, is known as the 'stress hormone'. It is produced by the adrenal glands and its levels are highest in the morning, helping us to wake up and start the day. Cortisol levels decrease throughout the day, reaching their lowest point in the evening, allowing us to relax and prepare for sleep. However, if cortisol levels remain high due to stress or other factors, it can interfere with sleep.

Other hormones also play a role in sleep regulation. Growth hormone, for example, is released during deep sleep and is essential for tissue repair and growth. Leptin and ghrelin, hormones that regulate appetite, also follow a circadian rhythm and can influence sleep. High levels of ghrelin and low levels of leptin have been linked to sleep deprivation.

In summary, hormones play a vital role in regulating our sleep patterns. They help to maintain our circadian rhythm, signalling when it's time to sleep and wake up. Disruptions in hormone production or release can therefore significantly impact sleep quality and duration.
