They are red in colour due to the presence of haemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

White blood cells, or leukocytes, are larger than red blood cells and have a variety of shapes. They are generally colourless as they do not contain haemoglobin. There are several types of white blood cells, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, each with their own unique characteristics. For example, neutrophils are the most common type of white blood cell and are characterised by their multi-lobed nucleus.
